I can finish well. I may have had a bad start in life. I may have messed up along the way. I may have made mistakes. I may have regrets. But I can finish well and that is what matters most. It is more important to finish well than to start well.
Some start well but fall. Even the ‘mightiest’ of companies can fall. Even Goliath, the tallest man in the Bible fall.
Jesus, as always, shows me the way. His life was relatively short. He died in his early thirties, yet he finished well. He prays to the Father, ‘I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do’ (John 17:4).
This is my ambition in life. I want to complete the work God has given me to do.
But how can i make sure i finish well? These are the lessons in my life.
Avoid the temptation to focus just on the here and now, and act in the light of eternity. Listen to parental advice. Honouring parents is high on the list of God’s priorities. Family life and good parenting are so important. Guard my lips. Those who guard their lips guard their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin. It is impossible to overestimate the importance of my words and of controlling the tongue. Work hard. Work is a blessing. Success can be hard work. It requires diligent perseverance. Love the truth. Be a person of integrity. Integrity does not mean being perfect. It means being honest, "real and authentic" (it is the opposite of hypocrisy). Integrity ‘is the key to success. A person with integrity has the – often rare – ability to pull everything together, to make it all happen no matter how challenging the circumstances.’
Am I troubled, distressed, agitated or afraid? Jesus does not want me to be troubled, but to have peace in my heart. Jesus has good plans for my future. Jesus will do even greater things through me. Jesus will continue to answer my prayers. Jesus will never leave me alone. Jesus says, ‘I will not leave you as orphans. He says that he’ll ‘provide me another Friend so that I will always have someone with me. This Friend is the Spirit of Truth... he has been staying with me, and will even be in me!’ Jesus will continue to love me. Those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them’. The way in which Jesus passes on his legacy to me is through the Holy Spirit. He will send the Holy Spirit to live in my heart: ‘The Friend, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send at my request, will make everything plain to me’.
Partial obedience is still disobedience. Honour the Lord to the end.
John 14:1–3
Jesus said, ‘Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.’
